Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans Celebrates the Passage of the Social Security Fairness Act
Illinois retirees and future retirees are celebrating the news of the US Senate passage of H.R. 82 Social Security Fairness Act. We applaud the bipartisan support for this legislation that was decades in the making, and urge President Biden to sign the bill immediately.
The Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans appreciates the 15 out of 17 US Representatives from Illinois and U.S. Senator Durbin and U.S. Senator Duckworth for voting yes on H.R. 82 in the House and Senate.
Millions of retired federal, state and local government employees who worked as teachers, police, firefighters, postal workers and general employees have long been denied their hard earned benefits because of Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). The WEP and GPO also disportionately affected women and low income families. The repeal of these provisions through H.R. 82 Social Security Fairness Act means that millions of workers will now be able to access the retirement they rightly earned.
The Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans also appreciates the countless public sector employees, retirees, our members and movement leaders who have spent many sessions working to repeal WEP and GPO. The stories shared with the Alliance, unions, and representatives, the lobby days, thousands of calls and emails, days of action, and more have lead up to this historic moment.
When we fight, we win!
