Retiree Group Endorses Jan Schakowsky for Reelection to U.S. House on Social Security’s 89th Anniversary

Cites Her Commitment to Strengthening and Increasing Earned Social Security and Medicare Benefits

Chicago, IL –  Members of the Alliance for Retired Americans proudly announced their endorsement of Jan Schakowsky for reelection to the U.S. House from Illinois’ 9th Congressional District (CD) on Wednesday. The Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans is a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 8,800 members in the CD.

Rep. Schakowsky has earned a perfect lifetime pro-retiree score of 100% in the Alliance’s Congressional Voting Record. The event was also a celebration of Social Security’s 89th birthday.

“Jan Schakowsky has been a friend of the Alliance since our launch in 2001. She knows that seniors have earned the Social Security and Medicare benefits they rely on, and she will battle every day to strengthen and increase them,” said Don Todd, President of the Illinois Alliance. “Illinois Alliance members also support Jan to continue representing Illinois’s 9th Congressional District in the U.S. House because of her belief in affordable health care — including lower drug prices — as well as pension security and quality long-term care.”

“Social Security is one of the best examples of government working for the people. Nearly 9 out 10 American seniors receive Social Security benefits, which keeps over 15 million seniors from falling into poverty,” said Schakowsky. “While Republicans in DC are scheming to slash benefits for seniors and make fewer Americans eligible to receive Social Security payments, my Democratic colleagues and I are fighting to expand benefits and update cost-of-living adjustments to meet the needs of seniors.”

In addition, Mr. Todd praised Rep. Schakowsky’s vote for legislation to lower drug costs by requiring Medicare to negotiate drug prices for seniors; cap out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 a year; cap insulin copays at $35 per month; and make necessary vaccines free for all Medicare beneficiaries.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher for seniors like me. We need Jan Schakowsky in the House fighting against any Republican plan to cut Social Security and Medicare,” added Mr. Todd. “That’s why Jan Schakowsky is the obvious choice for Illinois seniors.”
