Senator Durbin Supports Grand Betrayal

29Sen. Dick Durbin, the second most powerful Democrat in the Senate, appeared on Fox News Sunday and told host Chris Wallace that he would support cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits as part of a grand bargain with Republicans.

The agreement by the U.S. House and Senate to fund the government until January 15, and to raise the debt ceiling through February 7 is good news, but it leaves us with a new deadline for tough decisions – December 13th. A ‘grand bargain’ that would cut Social Security and Medicare would be a “Grand Betrayal.”

Tell Sen. Durbin to oppose any cuts in Social Security and Medicare benefits, including the chained CPI or any shifting of health care costs onto Medicare beneficiaries. An average retiree would lose $6,000 in benefits over 15 years with a chained CPI. Adoption of the chained CPI is a cruel proposal to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, veterans, the disabled, and children of deceased workers, none of whom has caused our fiscal situation.

Tell Sen. Durbin that you strongly oppose the chained CPI, and want him to work to keep Social Security and Medicare out of spending and debt negotiations, by clicking here.
