2021 IARA Virtual Convention
Join grassroots leaders, activists, organizers from around the state for the 2021 Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans Biennial convention which will be held by virtually and by phone via Zoom on Wednesday September 29th starting at 10am. Featured in this year’s program are William McNary – Co-Director for Citizen Action IL, Rich Fiesta – Executive Director of the national Alliance for Retired Americans, Bill Looby – Political Director for the IL AFL-CIO, Magda Derisma – Legislative Director for the IL AFL-CIO, State Representative Lekesia Collins, and Illinois State Senate President Don Harmon.
At the convention, we will share the work we have been doing to advance key priorities for seniors on the federal level, including the movement for a historic investment in home and community-based services, the call for an improved and expanded Medicare system with the power to negotiate to lower drug costs with the big pharmaceutical corporations, and the fight to repeal WEP/GPO.
You’ll also hear about the work being done to protect our democracy from extremist voter suppression measures being passed in states around the country, as well as our opportunity to advance the rights of workers by passing the historic Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.
With so much at stake in the 2022 midterms, we will hear about what we can do to mobilize seniors to elect champions for retirees and workers in the coming election, and how we can play a vital role in advancing a ballot referendum that will ban anti-union “right to work” in Illinois. We’ll also learn about progress that has been made in the Illinois General Assembly, as well as what will be priorities in the coming year.
