Congressional GOP Members Holding Older Americans Hostage with Default on America Act

The Alliance for Retired Americans calls for an increase to the debt ceiling with no strings attached. However, Congressional GOP members are supporting Speaker McCarthy’s Default on America Act (H.R. 2811) which would have devasting effects on older Americans and other vulnerable populations.

In Illinois, this legislation will affect older adults by:

• Threatening Medical Care for 186,300 Illinois Veterans
• Worsening Social Security and Medicare Assistance Wait Time for 2.5 Million Illinois Seniors and People with Disabilities
• Jeopardizing Food Assistance for 54,000 Older Adults
• Raising Housing Costs for 28,300 Illinoisans who Recieve Rental Assistance, Including Older Adults and People with Disabilities
